KTCC– Uganda successfully celebrates International Sign Language Day

Children at Mirembe Primary School were treated to a lesson on Ugandan Sign Language on the International Day of Sign Languages. The presentation focused on understanding deafness, appreciating sign language and promoting inclusion. KTCC’s partner with the Uganda Federation of the Hard of Hearing supported the days’ activities.
The activity will also feature Winnie, a KTCC child ambassador, who will deliver an inspirational speech to her fellow children about sign language, inclusion and the importance of embracing people with different abilities. Her participation will demonstrate the important role children can play in advocacy and creating positive change among their peers.
The primary objectives aimed to
- Inspire children to become advocates for inclusion within their schools, families and communities.
- Increase children’s understanding of deafness and the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing people.
- Create awareness about the importance of sign language as a means of communication.
- Promote respectful and inclusive ways of interacting with people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Address common misconceptions and negative attitudes associated with deafness.
